Slow Cookers

Slow cookers, also known as Crock-pots, are small or medium electronic cooking appliances used to simmer food at relatively low temperatures over a period of hours. This allows for the unattended cooking of stews, pot roasts, soup and other foods. Slow-cooked food also has certain different flavors compared to convection cooked food.

How long do you cook an 8 pound whole chicken in crock pot?

User Avatar
Whole chickens rarely go above six pounds. For a six-pound chicken, cook it on high 6 to 6 1/2 hours or low 7 1/2 to 8 hours. If you are referring to a baby turkey or whole turkey breast, the cook time for an 8 pounder in a crock pot would be 8 to 9 hours on low or 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 hours on high. When a thermometer reads 165 degrees F and the juices run clear, the chicken/turkey is done. Keep a close eye near the end of the cook time, because all crock pots cook at different temperatures and times.

Can you put your stoneware from a crockpot in the oven?

User Avatar
I was going to use mine too. Mine a Rival, has a stoneware insert. It says it can go in the oven, but does not mention temps. The lid can not go in, but I thought I could use heavy foil. I think I'll check their site first for temp info. I found this on the crock pot website. It says that all Crock-Pot slow cooker removable crockery may be used safely in the oven with temperatures up to 400°F without the lid.

How long before soup goes bad in a slow cooker?

User Avatar
Other than seafood soups as long as the slow cooker is placed in a fridge (which is doubtful you have done so) soups can be kept in the fridge for up to 5 days to a week (depending on what is in the soup.) If you have left the soup out for more than 24 hours in a heated kitchen then don't eat it! 'When in doubt throw it out!'

Can you cook a precooked smoked ham in a crock pot?

User Avatar
You can, but I don't see why you would want to cook a precooked ham. If you want to add more flavor, try a glaze and baking it in the oven rather than cooking it again. Also, by cooking it in liquid in a crock pot you may lose some of the smoked flavour.

For how long do you cook a fresh ham?

User Avatar
According to the USDA site (link below): Cut Weight (lbs) Minutes per lb Whole leg, bone-in 12 to 16 lb. = 22 to 26 minutes per lb. Whole leg, boneless 10 to 14 lb = 24 to 28 minutes per lb. Half, bone-in 5 to 8 lb = 35 to 40 minutes per lb. Cooking by Temperature Most cookbooks recommend cooking by temperature, and this varies depending on the recipe. One for an apricot-glazed ham at 5 to 7 lbs : 325 °F oven for 1 3/4 hour to 2 1/4 hours or until the thermometer reads 140 °F. Adjusting The Final Temperature At the rarest, cook to 140 °F. (bacteria are killed at a lower temp) For a fresh ham it is 22 to 24 minutes per pound. Keeping in mind that your meat will continue to cook for another 10 minutes or so after you take it out of the oven, you can take it out about 5 °F below what you want the internal temp to be. The other thing is that the outside of the roast will cook more so if the internal temp is a little low that will work because you will in all likelihood cook the rest again. Cook it slowly to minimize uneven cooking (preferably 325 °F). Also, a fresh ham is just a fancy way of saying that it is the same cut of meat as a smoked ham but is not seasoned, brined, or smoked.

How long does a pot roast take to cook in a crock pot?

User Avatar
Almost any large cut of meat in a regular-sized crock pot will be done in 8-10 hours - the more flavor and fall-off-the-bone tenderness you want the longer you cook it. Because of the low temperature and sealed environment food is less prone to burn or become dry. CROCK POT BEEF ROAST Ingredients: 3 to 4 lb. boneless pot roast 1 c. of "diet" 7-Up Celery salt 2 bay leaves 2 garlic sections, chopped or sliced Directions: 1. Wash roast and pat dry with paper towels, place in crock pot, pierce top of roast with fork and sprinkle top with celery salt. 2. Add bay leaves and garlic, pour DIET 7-Up over all and set crock pot on high for 4 hours, then low 2 hours or put on low for 8 hours. 3. Remove roast to platter to cool. Discard liquid. Serve with your favorite vegetables, rolls and salad.

What does auto mean on a slow cooker?

User Avatar
When a slow cooker is set on auto, it starts out with a high temperature and then switches to a low temperature when the crock has warmed up sufficiently. When the crock starts to cool off it switches back to high again, and so on.

What temperature do slow cookers cook at. Are the slow cooking temperatures for high and low different?

User Avatar
What temperature does a slow cooker cook at? If you have a slow cooker, you have probably wondered what temperature the low and high settings actually are, since few slow cookers actually tell you on the dial or even in the manual. And some are definitely fussy about ensuring food is thoroughly cooked in order to avoid food illnesses. Slow cookers, and their accompanying recipes generally come with two settings. The low setting is actually 200F. The high setting is 300F. Both of these temperatures are suitable for cooking raw meat when cooked for the length of time the recipe recommends. Some slow cookers also have a warm setting, this setting should only be used after the main meal has been cooked and you are keeping it warm a short time before dinner is served.

Can you keep baked potatoes hot in crock pot?

i don't see why not...but i wouldn't try to keep them warm for longer than an hour. they could possibly keep cooking and end up doing something weird like falling apart or becoming a different texture. or they could dry out.

You may want to consider used snow removal equipment, if you are seeking inexpensive. A large pawn shop in your area will more than likely have these items. If not, you can check with Lowes, Walmart and/or Home Depot in their equipment department.
