How long do nurse sharks sleep?

User Avatar
Basedd on my experienes in Eleuthera, Bahamas, nurse sharks actually do nap, breathing regularly and without moving, which most shaks cannot do; they have to be moving to get enough water through their gills. Nurses can breathe stationary because they can pum water through their mouth and out their gills. Nurse sharks generally dont have a sleep period like we do, they dont have a long period of REM sleep, which is when you are in a deep sleep state. Nurse sharks generally nap for around an average of 1 hour, but sometimes 2, and 3 hours as well. Nurse sharks will nap either on the sea floor (in my case, in a small bay area, 20 feet deep) or in their shallow nests. Nurse sharks are generally nocturnal animals, which is why the often nap in the day.

What does the shark tattoo in hawaiian mean?

User Avatar
Polynesians also considered the shark to be a sacred animal. For them, the shark tattoo served to protect them from their enemies. A Polynesian fisherman would also sport tattoo symbols to protect him and his vessel from sharks in the waters where he fished. In Hawaii, you'll hear about the protective power of the aumakua, a row of tattooed dots around the ankle that keep sharks at bay. Legend tells of a woman swimming in the ocean and being attacked by a shark -- until it saw the tattoo. It let go and promised it wouldn't happen again!

How fast do shark teeth grow back?

User Avatar
Sharks have rows of teeth (flattened down) behind those they are currently using to bite with. If one breaks, one of these replacement teeth moves forwards (rotates up) to replace it withing 1 or 2 days. The spare teeth are constantly replaced throughout the shark's life.

Why do fish swim at the top?

User Avatar
Some fish, like beta's, will need air. They have to get oxygen every once in a while. For lack of oxygen in the water, you might want to consider activated carbon rock pouches in to your filtration system, or connect an air pump and air stone in your tank. air pumps and stones do not oxygenate water, that is an old myth. a bubble moving to the surface only causes water movement, in order to get more oxygen in water you must either have live plants or some sort of waterfall that will break the surface tension dragging air in and allowing expelled gasses to be released at the same time, carbon is a good idea it will grab the excess nutrients that are using the existing oxygen. air pumps and stones do oxygenate the water by moving the surface of the water allowing gas exchange. The circulation of water from bottom to top in the tank is what causes most of the oxygenation. Another reason may be water temperature, If you have a large tank, and the bottom of the tank's water is colder then the top, your fish may require a level of heating in the water. I.E. Tropical Fish Tank. its better to clean the water and add a lil plant from pets at home. or it can be coz they need oxygen or because they're trying to escape from something in the tank, aka ammonia or a different desiese. i could be because they are eating small particles of dust at the top. Do sharks eat people intentionally?

User Avatar
Great white sharks don't eat people on purpose. They mistake you for a seal if your on a surf board or if your in a wet suit. Bull sharks on the other hand they don't care what you are, if they are hungry, they will eat you. Bull sharks have the highest testosterone level than any other shark.

How big of a fish tank do you need for a small shark?

User Avatar
It is not recommended to get a shark unless you are very experienced with saltwater aquariums. I've had fishtanks for over 10 years and still don't think I'm ready for a shark. But, if you really want to give it a go, the minimum average tank size for sharks is 260 gallons.
