National Anthems

A national anthem is a form of patriotic music that reflects on the history and traditions of a nation. The majority of national anthems are marches or hymns. The oldest anthem known is 'Wilhelmus', the Dutch national anthem, which was written between 1568 and 1572. The Japanese anthem, 'Kimi ga Yo' is often wrongly thought to be the oldest because the lyrics are taken from a poem written in 794, but it didn't become an anthem until the mid-1800's.

Who are the kids standing with the players during the national anthems at the world cup?

These kids are part of an international program that chooses 1400 or so kids every year from all over the world to get the chance to walk onto the pitch with a professional soccer/football player. The program is called the FIFA McDonald's Escort Programme. It is frustrating that the game announcers make absolutely no comment about these charming children. My guess is that as McDonald's sponsors the children, the announcers don't want to give McDonald's "Free" advertising. A poor excuse. These kids and the program deserve recognition.

What does the star- Spangled- Banner mean?

In 1931 Congress passed legislation making "The Star-Spangled Banner" the national anthem of the United States. The song began as a poem written by the amateur poet Francis Scott Key on 14 September 1814. On that morning Key was looking at the smoke rising from Fort McKinley in http://www.friendus.com/topic/baltimore-maryland, which had just endured twenty-five hours of British attack. Through the smoke Key caught sight of the large garrison flag still flying, and this image inspired him to jot a few lines down on the back of a letter. Key lengthened and revised the poem, and the next day it was published as a http://www.friendus.com/topic/broadside with Key's recommendation that the words be sung to a tune he liked, the popular British song "To Anacreon in Heaven." Soon the poem appeared in several newspapers along the East Coast. Shortly thereafter Thomas Carr's music store in Baltimore published the words and music together under the present title. The song had become popular by the start of the Civil War and was frequently played on patriotic occasions. Members of the Maryland State Society, members of the U.S. Daughters of 1812, and Congressman J. Charles Linthicum of Baltimore are credited with bringing about the legislation that made the song the national anthem. The original flag that inspired Key is preserved at the Smithsonian Institution.

What is New Zealand's national anthem?

New Zealand is unique in that it has two national anthems: "God Defend New Zealand" with words by Thomas Bracken, and music by Joseph Woods, and "God Save the Queen." Both anthems are considered equal, but "God Defend New Zealand" is the most commonly used.

In the Maori it is:

E Ihoa Atua,

O nga Iwi Matoura,

Ata whaka rongona;

Me aroha noa.

Kia hua ko te pai;

Kia tau to atawhai;

Manaakitia mai

Aotearoa But Maori and English are not the same when translated.

In English it is:

God of nations! at Thy feet

In the bonds of love we meet,

Hear our voices, we entreat,

God defend our Free Land.

Guard Pacific's triple star,

From the shafts of strife and war,

Make her praises heard afar,

God defend New Zealand
God Defend New Zealand.
New Zealand has two national anthems: "God Save The Queen" and "God Defend New Zealand.
"God Defend New Zealand" is the National Anthem, but "God Save the Queen" is also officially a National Anthem, but is generally only used on regal and semi-regal occasions.

What is the national anthem of France?

The French National anthem is 'La Marseillaise', composed in April 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle in Strasbourg. It is named so because it was sung in the streets of Paris by volunteer soldiers from Marseille.

It was originally called 'Chant de Guerre pour l'Armée de Rhin', in English: 'War Song for the Army of the Rhine'.

It became the song of the French Revolution, and was accepted as such on Bastille Day (July 14, 1795).

It was arranged by composer Louis Hector Berlioz in the 1830s; a popular recording is one with Jean-Pierre Jacquillat conducting the Orchestra de Paris.
