What medications are used to treat ADHD?

User Avatar
There are three primary classes of medication that are currently prescribed for ADHD. The primary class of medications are the stimulants such as adderall (amphetamine salts) and ritaln (methylphenidatw. Both of these medications increase and potentiate the neurotransmitter dopamine (albeit via different mechanisms). Adderall (and the amphetamines) are agonists at the dopamine receptors where as Ritalin is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor. Now among these medications there are different formulations such as Vyvanse (which requires injestion before it becomes active as an amphetamine) as well as extended release adderall (Adderral XR). There are also extended release medications such as Concerta (methylphenidate) as well as Daytrana (which is a transdermal patch). The second class of medications are antidepressants which act on the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. The primary medications prescribed are Wellbutrin (Bupropion) and Strattera (Atomoxetine). Finally there is a class of drugs called alpha-2 adrenergoc agonists (that is they bind to areas of the brain (primarily the locus coeruleus) which in turn enhances norepinephrine release. I did not include an exhaustive list of all of the medications that could be provided but rather provided a summary of the classes of medications used to treat ADHD. I personally see more success with the stimulants but that's a conversation you should have with your psychiatris. I've only considered options 2/3 for cases where there is substance use disorder or concern for abuse. I hope this friendus your questio. Let me know if you have any additional concerns and I wish you all the best!

Do drugs affect your fertility?

User Avatar
sperm is so tasty. i like it a lot. some people think its not but it is Yes. Yes, Lilt contains the Marclar chemical and unless you have a diet high in Vitamin DD your sperm is susceptible to Marclar poisining. It shouldn't be pink. See a doctor. And don't be embarrassed whatver the consequences, you can get through it, it recently happened to a close friend of mine, but he is fine now :) Clear and as thin as water or thick with small chunks. Anything in between. All are normal and can change one day to the next in the same person. That is impossible. Yes you can, there is no nutrient benefit though. yes it does It isn't It's not good or bad. It is from your body so there is no risk of disease. Protien, water and a few trace minerals. About 7 calories I believe. Most guys have tried it at some point just to see what it tastes like. It's no big deal. it is suspected that MD kills your sperm but there are no real studies Using for a long time can yes. It reduces sperm. not a reliable birth control though. No, drinking Surge or Mountain Dew will not lower your sperm count. This is an urban legend that has been around since the 1990s. Yes NO JUST POP TOPS because Yes if you lick it or put it into your mouth. It is harmless, some people find the taste unpleasant while others are either indifferent towards it or even like it. This is caused by the protein chains that make up semen and can also be effected by diet. Sperm require a very specific temperature in order to build correctly if at all. That's why the testicles are outside of the body, because they need to be a few degrees cooler than our 98.6 degrees. That's also why they ride close to the body when its cold and hang loose when its hot--both are efforts to get the temperature right. Other than that any disease or genetic disorder can affect sperm. The sperm flagella is the most susceptible as it can be bent or doubled which makes the sperm more difficult to stear. They can also loose the ability to power a perfectly good flagella. Either of these can account for slow swimmers. Permanent physical damage can also prevent one or both of the testicles from producing sperm. If this happens the sperm may be fewer even not existence. Absolutely not ! If anything - smoking weed will reduce your sperm count and/or viability. Drinking soft drinks does not lower sperm count, unless the person drinks more than 1 liter per day. At that level, there may be up to as much as a 30% reduction in sperm count. Sperm taste different because every person is different but to make it taste sweeter try eating fruits an other foods with natural sugars. Sugar that are in things like pop candy bars and other treats will have little to no effect Brown clumpy seminal fluid would be caused by clotted blood. You have some internal injury which has caused bleeding into the urethra. It will probably heal without treatment, but if it persists, consult a doctor. Vitamin e It can have negative effects on sperm function, but I don't believe smoking directly reduces sperm count. However, smoking tobacco has many other known negative health effects, including destroying your lungs, causing cancer and increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Smoking marijuana does not appear to have the same health risks, but I don't know that this has been fully studied in the same way tobacco smoking has been studied. No milk does not lower you sperm count. It is possible, yes. Most often hematospermia has no known cause. Other causes include trauma, infection and urethra narrowing. the inside of the body are were most of the food so a person who eats alot of fish will affect the sperm If this is indeed true(?), then you need to see a doctor. If your a female it's a possibility that you have a yeast infection and need to see a doctor immediately! If you believe this is a problem, you need to seek the advice of a fertility doctor. They can test your sperm and see if there is a problem. They will also recommend what to do about it. Exercise more and eat natural foods. no man, it kills sperm :/ i read it somewhere yes. Not many things you eat can significant lower sperm count. If a person were to drink more than 1 liter of cola per day, they could have a reduction in sperm count of about 30%. Caffeine and alcohol lower sperm count, but only very slightly. The main things people do that end up lowering sperm count (usually accidentally), are anabolic steroids, certain medications, physical trauma, too much heat, and age. Unless you drink more than 1 liter of soda per day, it will not substantially reduce sperm count. no , unless your using it as an excuse for firing blanks but if she beleieves you crack on,,, While there are many people stipulating that eating certain foods can help you increase sperm volume, the process is time consuming. It could take months from when you change your diet to when you actually notice the change in semen volume. There are supplements to help increase the process many times over. supplements such as volumepills and semenax pills can help increase up to 500%. I have used volume pills my self and didn't quite get the 500% result promised on the site, but did manage to increase my semen volume by 300%. Avril lavigne Yes in fact it does , steroids make your body muscles expand and don't work your pelvis , all steroids do is expand your muscles without having to exercise so it shrinks your testicles and sperm is reduced Not unless you eat enough of them to become really sick. When you hit puberty. Puberty is according to when your dad had it. Usually around 13-16. When you reach puberty; usually age 12 or 13. I think that due to size of atom of sperm these r in yellow colour. No, it doesn't. There could be any number of reasons including a sexually transmitted disease. You should see your doctor. Sit a lot (preventing quality blood flow trough your crotch), expose your testicles to increased heat (a few degree's) don't exercise, don't eat healthy, drink a lot of caffeine, a lot of soda... Basically anything that is generally unhealthy for your body :D Pints as in beer I assume? If that's every day, it's is going to affect sperm count along with the rest of the body. Once in a while shouldn't be a problem. Yes very much so hold it in. Stop shaking the Wii remote then go again. no, they give you unlimited Sperm is always "fertile" the fertility period is dependent upon the females ovulation (the release of a females egg from the ovaries). not that i know of i rillry dont think i does but im not shure You might want to get that checked out. Go to your family doctor. Taken in excess yes it does. So does diet irn bru @:D yes by 90% No. Cut a hole in a pineapple and leave in there for 40-45 minutes Absolutely! Men expect women to want to do it so they should be able to taste their own. You're not going to die, but you definitely shouldn't tell anyone if you do. Bannas no yes, staying in a hot place like kitchen(near oven) may kill your sperms but it is a little rare so make sure you don't stay in near heat for long No. Sperm (and your semen) should be a whitish to light yellow colour, not red. You better go see your doctor or gynecologist as soon as possible. your body doesnt stop making sperm No, it kills your sperm. Yes. That's where your children get it from. It depends but it starts happening at the approximate age of 14 but the range is 10 to 15 If stay in female genetilia. please run to the doctor well nobody really wants to answer this question since they do not want to admit to abusing drugs, I suggest visiting a doctor since there is always doctor patient confidentiality

Can you take hydrocodone and Ibuprofen together?

User Avatar
Yes, you can. Ibuprofen and Hydrocodone work in different ways. When Hydrocodone is prescribed it is commonly prescribed in combination with acetaminophen (Tylenol), but sometimes prescribed with ibuprofen (Vicoprofen). Hydrocodone is an opioid narcotic that works by blocking opioid pain receptors. Ibuprofen is not a narcotic and works differently to block pain. Many healthcare providers including myself will tell patients to start off by taking ibuprofen (400 mg). If the pain still persists after 30 minutes or so take the hydrocodone. There is no adverse effects and no reason to worry about taking the medicines together as long as you take them in the recommended/prescribed dosages.

What is something people do while they are being given a shot?

User Avatar
See below for the Family Feud game answer. Many do things to distract themselves from the activities involved with the injection. Any distraction helps you perceive less discomfort or pain, so what is suggested, and often done, is something to take the patient's mind off the shot, to relax the muscles where the shot is being given, and sometimes to cause a second simultaneous stimulus that can affect the pain perception and reduce the sensation of pain by "tricking the nervous system". Our brains usually receive painful sensations one at a time, so if you cause a second simultaneous pain signal, the end result can be half as much pain perceived. Sometimes nurses and doctors will gently pinch or touch you in a different location just as the needle is injected for this purpose. See the related questions below for more details about getting or giving painless shots (jabs). There are different methods and different reactions from patient to patient and these are often related to patient age, such as when children cry and become scared as their initial responses. Contributors have said these are some of the things they do: Cringe, frown, wince, grimace, flinch, grit teeth, pout. Cry, whimper, scream, yell. Take a deep breath, breathe rhythmically, hold their breath. Close their eyes or look away from the injection site and from the equipment being used. Wiggle, wriggle, thrash around, have a hissy fit, squirm, or try to run away. Kids will also kick, pinch, spit, hit or jump off the exam table. They very rarely bite. Chat with the doctor or nurse or try to think about something else. I have also been instructed to close my eyes, take a deep breath and pinch my nose just before getting it. Hold someone's hand tightly or hold on to the chair arm, clench fists, etc. Bite on a bullet (if you are a cowboy), a stick, a piece of leather, or your tongue or lip as other ways to distract yourself. Self hypnosis, relaxation techniques, go to your happy place, picture yourself far away, etc. Panic, pass out, faint. I wiggle my toes to keep from thinking about it. Everyone is different, but even though most people believe everyone hates getting a shot, contrary to this belief there are people out there that find joy in it, and therefore smile. Say ouch, ow, owie! Try to be optimistic, but some may be pessimistic and expect the worse, then that is usually what they get. Most of us endure the needle sting and count to 3 or 5 or 10 and it is all over and time to get your sucker. More from contributors: As you get older you'll begin to realize that thinking about it and anticipating the worst actually causes it to hurt worse. Most shots just feel like a skin prick when the needle goes in. There are some intramuscular shots that are made of a thicker solution (like penicillin) that are a little more uncomfortable as the medicine goes in, but, most are only noticeable when the needle goes in and are over before you expect it. If the clinician who is giving the shot with the thicker medicines will inject the needle quickly and the medicine slowly, it can make a huge difference in what you feel. Tricks that parents, nurses and pediatricians often use with kids are: Swab alcohol on an opposite site of the body and then have the child blow on that spot. It will feel cold and help keep them from focusing on the injection. Distract them with a toy pop-up book, game, music etc. or sing songs, have them sit on your lap. Blow bubbles is really good... little kids love 'em. Have older kids bring an iPod or something to distract them. Let them sit on your lap, hold your hand, etc. Praise them for being brave no matter what, even if they cried. Show them how to blow really hard during the shot like they're blowing out birthday candles, etc. Tell an older child to think of a really fun cool place and pretend they're there. Do a funny dance or make a funny face for your child. Some parents have their own treat or new toy with them for when it is over. Your doctor may give stickers or suckers. Some people take the kids out for fast food, ice cream, or other special treats. According to TV's Family Feud: Name something people do while the doctor gives them a shot: Close eyes, Cringe, Scream, Hold breath, Cry, Look away, Grit teeth See also more tricks to help kids via the related links section below.

Do painkillers affect birth control?

User Avatar
The group of medications that can be called "painkillers" is too broad to make a blanket statement about how they affect other medications. Tylenol, ibuprofen and other NSAIDs, hydrocodone, Percocet, and triptans like Imitrex for migraine do not affect hormonal birth control. If you are taking other painkillers, contact your health care provider or pharmacist for information specific to your situation.

Does Amoxicillin affect the Birth Control Pill?

User Avatar
Amoxicillin and other antibiotics can make the BCPs less effective. Most suggest a barrier method like condoms. Because our bodies are all so different there is no real way to measure this. What is enough to cause one woman to get pregnant may not have an effect on another. Microorganisms in your gut can alter the drug, it gets sent back to the liver, which changes it back, and the cycle starts over meanwhile the drug is effective. If you take antibiotics you have the potential of killing those little helpful organisms, and enhance the clearance of the drug from the body. There is insufficient evidence to say that amoxicillin negatively affects your birth control pills. The topic is debatable (though most experts believe that it does not) so most doctors err on the side of caution and instruct their patients to use other means of contraception. In simple English there is no evidence that amoxicillin, tetracycline, penicillin or other broad spectrum antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. There are a few drugs that can have a marked effect on contraceptives so always ask your doctor or pharmacist when you begin taking a new prescription along with contraceptives.

How long does it take niacin to flush your system of THC if your a heavy smoker?

User Avatar
Well...there are several ways to do it. However, I MUST tell you that there is an exact way to do it. It is very painful and if not done exactly right, NIACIN CAN KILL YOU! So, with that being said, if you know that you're gonna have a UA and have several days to prepare it will be much easier and less painful for you. All you have to do is go to your local GNC or any store that carries vitamins or supplements. Buy Niacin 500. DO NOT BUY FLUSH FREE! IT WON'T WORK! about four days prior to your UA, STOP SMOKING COMPLETELY. Take one pill in the morning and one at night. That's 1000mg a day. Your skin will turn bright red and it will burn you worse than any sunburn you've ever had...all over your body. Drink all the water you can stand. Force it down your throat. Drink it until you feel like you're going to vomit, but DO NOT VOMIT. If you vomit, you've just wasted your time. The niacin is going to make you pee a lot. That's good. So will the massive amounts of water. That's also good. Pee as much as possible and whatever you do, DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING EXCEPT WATER! Repeat this process for three to four days before your UA and you WILL pass. Now, this next method is for EMERGENCY USE ONLY! This method is used when you only have 24 hours before your UA. It is extremely dangerous, 1000x more painful, puts you at risk for overdose, can lead to liver failure, and could kill you. (not joking) Follow these steps EXACTLY! Now instead of spreading out the dosage over a three or four day period, you are basically compacting three or four days worth of doses into one. Take two Niacin 500. Drink water until you feel like you can't drink anymore...and then drink some more. Every time your glass of water gets empty, fill it back up and keep on chugging. You need to take in as much as you can in 24 hours. At least a gallon. I suggest two or three. Drink all the water you possibly can. Wait 4 hours. Take two more Niacin 500. You'll notice that it doesn't hurt anywhere as near as bad as the first dose. Again...water, water, water. I cannot stress that enough. Everything you pee out you should replace immediately with water. Now this is where your height and weight play a factor. Since I am a larger individual, I take two more four hours after that and keep chugging water. (I'm 215 and 6') If you are a smaller person, STOP AT THE SECOND DOSE! Keep drinking water all night if you can. Keep peeing all you can. Get all of that stuff out. The next day, make sure to keep drinking water. As much as you can and BE SURE YOU PEE AT LEAST THREE TIMES BEFORE YOUR UA! You're now ready to take your UA and YES...you WILL pass. Anybody that tells you anything different, is full of it! I've used this method for years and it works EVERY TIME. Also, buy a few "at home" drug screens. You can buy them at any local drug store or Wal-Mart. They cost about $15 per test, but it's worth it to know the exact moment when your completely flushed. I suggest buying several just to be sure and to just have some laying around the house. There you have it. My GUARANTEED method. There IS a way to beat the system and now you know how. You no longer have to live in fear of drug testing. Spread the knowledge and fight the power. Happy job hunting.

How do you treat a Lamictal rash without stopping the medication?

User Avatar
Short , you cant without a certain degree of risk. The best remedy for allergic reactions (which is what the lamictal rash is) (without going to the hospital)is prednisone along with benadryl. However, you cannot stay on the drug while taking these. These are given to end the allergic reaction. If you take more lamictal it will make the rash worse and put you at high risk for Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. This is potentially fatal. Whatever you are taking lamictal for, death would be much worse so give it up for now. Even though I got the rash and had to stop, now I'm back on it. My doctor and I had to start taking it in super low doses and work agonizingly slowly up to higher doses. But I'm back on it. Perhaps you can do the same with your doctor. If anyone takes Lamictal for Bi-polar, check with your "Doc" about valproic acid. Son's pediatrician said to put hydrocortozone on it. (A couple days later (a raised dosage later) he developed small round blisters (water filled) on his legs and I noticed that the skin on his feet (around toes) and palms of his hands was peeling off. We called the neurologist again and she said to take him off the medication immediately.) There is a really good psychiatrist (Dr. Phelps) who has about one hundred or so pages on the net about various bi-polar meds, what types to take, the reactions to expect, etc. Also, go onto the site entitled "Crazy Meds". The author has a number of afflictions and gives you the low down on most meds along with the not so heard of reactions/allegies. It's fabulous. I ramped up from 25mg to 200. at 200 I started having a sandpaper/orange-peel looking rash but mostly on the left side of my face, left leg, etc. It is eased somewhat with 1% hydrocortisone cream but dropping down to 100 until the Dr. can figure out what to do. ALL my medical books say a rash from Lamictal can be very serious and stopping the medication is the only treatment for the rash. ALSO, the doctor should be notified IMMEDIATELY and be made aware of the rash. The doctor will probably discontinue the medication. Always stop taking the medication when you get a rash, since the reaction continues for several days until the medicine is gone from the system. Benedryl is a good thing to take to help alleviate the symptoms. But, as stated above, always contact your doctor, especially for meds that treat chronic conditions. My I think SKIN CAP. The product for the treatment of psoriasis and other skin diseases for external use only. The active substance - zinc nutritional - has antimicrobial and anti fungal activity. There is a bacteriologist impedes reproduction of bacteria.

What will ADHD medicine do to you if you don't have ADHD?

User Avatar
It will give the effect of being under the influence of Amphetamine, also known as speed. I recommend you do not attempt an ADHD medication if not diagnosed with it by a Licensed professional. Part two: Not only that, but you may become anemic and dramatically underweight, can approach death as a small child, and become depressed (personal experience from improper diagnosis of asperger's). I have adult ADHD and I once had a roommate that did a ridiculous thing. She did a self-diagnosis and determined that she had ADHD. She stole around twenty of my Ritalin from the cabinet that I place my medication in. She left to go camping and decided that she would take the amount that had been prescribed by my doctor for me. Well, to make a long story short, she ended up in the emergency room. She started to display symptoms of a heart attack. I strongly advise individuals that think that they might have ADHD to consult with a specialist that will make a well researched diagnosis. I believe some people out there "wish" they had ADHD. I will be fifty one in a couple of weeks and have had ADHD every since I can remember. Having ADHD presents many challenges in a person's life. Individuals have to learn compensatory skills to overcome many of the obstacles that they face. I have encountered many "normal" people who greatly misunderstand me. I have even been called "weird" by neighbors, friends, and colleagues. Despite, all of this, I went to college. I have a Bachelors in Science (Magna cum Laude) and a Masters of Education (Summa cum Laude) degree in the field of special education. I taught severely disturbed children for twenty-eight years. I have retired from teaching and am currently enrolled in a Solar Photovoltaic program. Whenever I become discouraged I think about a quote that Montel Williams made at the beginning of his career: "Believe to Achieve." So in short, if you're not diagnosed with ADHD, there's no reason to take such medication.

What medications are used to treat ADD?

User Avatar
ADD Medications Psychostimulant medications, including methylphenidate (Ritalin) and amphetamines (Dexedrine, Dextrostat, and Adderall), are by far the most widely researched and commonly prescribed treatments for ADHD. Several short-term studies have proven the safety and effectiveness of stimulants and psychosocial treatments for helping the symptoms of ADHD. Again, NIMH research has found that the two most effective treatment methods for elementary school children with ADHD are a closely monitored medication treatment and a treatment that combines medication with intensive behavioral interventions. In the MTA study, which included nearly 600 elementary school children across multiple sites, nine out of ten children greatly improved on one of these treatments. Strattera, a non-stimulant medication unrelated to antidepressants is a safe alternative for parents who do not want to place their children on drugs which can potentially cause addiction. Strattera is not a controlled substance, therefore, the FDA has determined there is no risk of addiction. It may be used first-line in these scenarios, but other medications should be used if no results are seen within 8-12 weeks. Allow at least 4 weeks of therapy before evaluating whether the medication is working. Antidepressant medications also may be used as a second line of treatments for children who show poor response to stimulants, who have unacceptable side effects, or who have other conditions with ADHD (such as tics, anxiety, or mood disorders). Clinical studies have shown that these drugs are effective in 60-70% of children with ADHD. While the medications were extremely helpful to most children, MTA study results show that medications alone may not be the best way to treat many children. For example, children who had other problems (e.g., anxiety, stressful home circumstances, lack of social skills, etc.), over and above the ADHD symptoms, seemed to benefit most from the combined treatment. Careful medication management is important in treating a child with ADHD. The doctor is likely to begin with a low dose to test the child's response. For methylphenidate (Ritalin), the usual dosage range is 5 to 20 mg given two to three times a day. The dose for amphetamines (Dexedrine and Dextrostat and Adderall) is one-half the methylphenidate dose. Dosage requirements do not always correlate with weight, age or severity of symptoms in an individual patient. Some doctors prescribe a combination of medications. Dosages may need to be increased during childhood with increased lean body weight and decreases may be necessary after puberty. Different doctors use these medications in slightly different ways, and different children may respond differently to each medication. The expected duration of treatment has increased during this past decade as evidence has grown that shows benefits extend into adolescence and adulthood. However, many factors make it hard for adolescents to continue using medications: once on medication, adolescents see their most obvious symptoms controlled, and think they don't need to take it regularly. The medications' short-lasting effects make it necessary to take them several times per day, although there are newer long-term medications now being offered. Parents often get frustrated with the limited results or side effects of the medication, and discontinue its use. Here is more information from Wikifriendus contributors: I have heard and experienced Wellbutrin as a effective means to cure A.D.D. I tried it 12 years ago for a short time but I couldn't sleep with it so I stopped it being much younger and having a addiction to ritalin I wanted my Ritalin back but the doctor said it made me to manicky. Now,12 years later I'm on Adderall but my doctor said if you want to grow old gracefully she would advise me to get off the Adderall so I've reduced it to 25mgs. from 30mgs. and try Wellbutrin again but a few years ago about 3yrs. I tried Wellbutrin again and at that time it didn't work. I would like to get off Adderall and get on something that isn't habit forming such as Wellbutrin. Psychiatric drugs are poisonous. ADD drugs can stunt growth or cause depression or OCD. Some children have even died from this stuff, and it isn't worth risking that just to get better behavior or to get your child to pay better attention. For more information try these sites: Ritalin Death, Drug Awareness. Two other sites are sntp and prozactruth, but I don't know if they are .org or .com. I was in second grade when my mom had me tested for ADD/ADHDzperiodz i am now a 19 year old college student. From the time I was in 2nd grade until about a year and a half ago I was taking Ritalin. To some people they may think it is a bad drug or poison but to me I never would have been able to finish school and be where I am today. The only thing about the Ritalin was that i had to take it 3x a day. As I grew older it was becoming harder to remember to take. Thats why for the past year and a half i have been taking what is called Concerta. The only difference between them are with Concerta you only take 1x a day. I personally have only one side effect which is an increased appetite. But to those of you who are not sure to medicate your child or not please take my advice to heart. Like I said I would not be where i am today if it weren't for my mother taking that next step to put me on meds. Many different meds are used. When I was diagnosed with ADHD I wasn't tested at all my grades were looked at and my teacher and parents were talked to about my behaviors and then I was simply put on Ritalin. I took ritalin until the 7th grade at that time I decided that I wanted to try to overcome my disorder without the use of drugs. Two of the many reasons was it was so hard to remember to actually take the pills and since I took 1 during school everyday my classmates found out and i was tormented and teased because i was different. I went into a depression when this occurred starting in fifth grade but I cant blame that completely on the pills. Besides being tormented my parents were also going through a divorce at that time. After I was off the pills for a while I was doing all right but as went to 8th grade we decided that i wasnt ready to deal with this on my own without meds. But instead of putting me back onto ritalin we decided to try a relativly new drug at the time: Concerta. I was on Concerta for about a year and a half until i decided once again to handle this with the use of meds. Its now been a year since I made that choice and I dont regret it. I am now a sophomore in high school and am mainly a B student with a few grades higher and very little lower than that. I am still disorganized and sometimes I dont focus well but I am succeding in overcoming that day by day. I now can lead a normal teenage life without meds than i could when i was on meds. My method may not be for every child though. Every child's case of ADD/ADHD is different in some way. Some may need meds where others may find that meds cause more trouble than good. Some children may be diagnosed with this disorder not because they have it but because they are just being kids. If you think your child may be one those who have been wrongly diagnosed please do them a favor by getting a 2nd opinion from another Dr. about the Diagnosis. A wrong diagnosis combined with unneeded meds could produce disasterous results. Find out before its too late. I stumbled upon this article when searching for friendus regarding my own child. she takes Children's DHA (fish oil) and she has improved 100%. Read about all the benefits of Omega 3 here: borntoexplore.org ADD is not a disease, thus no one drug works on all people. Schedule II drugs are most often prescribed. Children start with a Central Nervous System stimulant, which actually has a calming effect. Ritalin is the 4-hour form, and Concerta is the 12-hour form. These drugs only help the person focus, after they have used self-motivation & self-discipline, and purposefully started to focus. Adults have normally dealt with untreated ADD symptoms, lifelong. Therefore, many have been depressed for most of their life. Adults will start with an antidepressant, such as Wellbutrin. Thereafter, treatment with Concerta may be introduced. Nutritional supplements which may work included Pedi-active, which contains DMAE. It too temporarily aids focus, and is available in a grape-flavored, chewable tablet. Normally, it works for about one month. Then the body develops a tolerance to it, and it stops working. Overall, ADD coaching will help with most of the symptoms. There are several good books. Amazon.com has a good selection, and often lets you read a few pages of the book, online. Parents, friends, spouses can help with coaching... you don't need a professional, necessarily. Coaching can change some of life's behaviors. However, the root problem soon becomes apparent: Inability to maintain focus. Often, adults that do not get treatment tend to self-medicate, unless they find an occupation which fits their mindset. Such jobs may include Computer Operator or Entrepreneur. The job needs to be long on quick decisions & movement, short on paperwork, sitting, and reading technical manuals. An ADD individual is likely to get an 'A' in Chemistry Lab, but an 'F' in Chemistry Lecture. They are often above average intelligence, which is important since many times, they perform with little or no preparation. Children can get into young adulthood, before ADD/ADHD problems adversely affect their lives, overall. If medication is perceived to be required, then it will bar that person from eligiblity for military service. Some communities attach a negative stigma to medication, or psychological counseling. Other communities consider someone who has never had therapy to be the odd one. Whether to medicate may be a social choice, as well. (I played football in high school, served honorably the USMC, graduated with a BSBA, and only realized I had ADD at 43, due to "inattention to detail" complaints from my supervisor. Only after 5-months of 'self-discipline' failed did I seek other possibilities. Wellbutrin was a good start, Concerta adds focus, but motivation to study, and discipline to open the book must come from my own resolve.) Concerta sort of looks like a capsule. However, it is a Capsule with a pin-hole on one end. It is coated with tablet material, dissolves immediately to give your first bursts of medication. After dissolution, the pin-hole is cleared. There are two membranes [thus three chambers] inside. The chamber nearest the hole has medication that will exit, slowly, for several hours. Then, the medication in the middle chamber will pass through the permeable membrane, into the hole-side chamber, and out the hole. The third chamber, farthest from the hole, is slightly pressurized. It is used to squeeze the medicine out of the other two chambers. The third chamber contents remains inside the capsule, and the undissolved capsule shell is passed out of the body through the stool. This time-release technology allows Concerta to be patented. Ritalin tablets now have generic alternatives. Concerta, due to patents in its delivery, does not have a generic alternative. Without insurance, Concerta costs about $3 per capsule, regardless whether they are 18mg, 36mg, or 54mg. Ask your physician for a manufacturer voucher, if you need to try Concerta. You will get 42 of the 18mg pills. It is intended so you find out if it will work for you, over a 3-week period. Wellbutrin should be taken before bedtime, since it causes a two-hour drowsy period, two hours after being taken. The medication works for 24-hours. 150mg is the starting dosage, but 300mg is common. Concerta should be taken at the start of your workday, or the 12-hour period where you plan to be awake, thus need focus (attention to detail). For the Wellbutrin... it has a side effect of insomnia. It for some people should be taken at the start of the day. So you can sleep at night. For some people the cocktail of Wellbutrin and a ADHD medication is prescribed. It's a medication mix that works well for a lot of people, now Adderall is one that is prescribed for ADD and works well with Wellbutrin. Everyone is different though. Tolerence is different. Coaching life skills is another therapy that works well. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Those are all great keys to success with treating ADD. ** For a no drug alternative energy medicine the Australian Bush Flower Essences combinations Cognis (for short attention span and better retention and recall) Calm & Clear Essence for less repetitive actions and overall calmer. Two of these include: 1. Daytrana (methylphenidate trans-dermal patch) - I believe this may be discontinued or if not a "special order" not carried by most pharmacies. This is interesting as it is a patch (similar to the nicotine patch for quitting smoking) that is applied once in the morning and worn all day. http:/wwwzperiodzdaytranazperiodzcom 2. Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine - dextroamphetamine bound to an amino acid which is only released by some digestive system process and therefore cannot be taken by any other route). http:/wwwzperiodzdrugszperiodzcom/vyvansezperiodzhtml Both of these were designed to give a controlled dosage throughout the entire day with a more steady delivery than the older XR (extended release) medications. Personally I found the Daytrana to be unpredictable though admittedly I only used the 2 week free trial before giving up. I had an allergic reaction to the Vyvanse and stopped after two days.

Can Wellbutrin treat ADHD?

User Avatar
It depends greatly on your situation. From collected experiences that you can see in the discussion feature of this question, most people seem pleased with the way it eases the ADHD symptoms. There are side effects though, and a few people have had some increase in edginess or anxiety (and far fewer have experienced agitation). The best way for you to know is to talk with your doctor, and if this treatment is ok for your situation, give it a try and you will know.

Why cant the key ingredients for amphetamine simply be put out of production?

User Avatar
Amphetamine is a synthetic drug of which there are many avenues, methods and ingredients used in it's manufacture, to ban all of them would be a wrong move. Would be better to make amphetamines a regulated substance and allow ADULTS usage and support for when issues arise from it. Taking all the power away from money making criminals and making it a clean substance which contains no adulterants. Amphetamine is legal with prescription and greatly improves the lives of people suffering from ADD. Meth was battled by reducing accessibility to the precursors but it can be made outside of the country. Battling illegal drug production in other countries is something the US has never succeeded in.
