Did the Houston Astros actually cheat?

User Avatar
The short answer: probably. News of the scandal first broke in a Nov. 12, 2019, report by Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic. It detailed a system in which the Houston Astros would monitor opposing catchers’ signs with cameras, then alert Astros batters of changeups and other off-speed pitches. A player or other employee would bang on a trash can to communicate to the current batter that one of these pitches was being thrown. Rosenthal and Drellich had credible sources, having talked to four former Astros players, but the smoking gun came later that day, from a video by Jomboy Media on YouTube. In it, Jimmy O’Brien, founder of Jomboy Media, was able to find clear evidence of suspicious banging occurring just before off-speed pitches. Since the news first broke last week, more evidence has come to light. Another report by Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich detailed emails from an Astros executive who asked for aid in stealing signs from the franchise’s scouting division. More damning footage has made the rounds on various baseball forum sites, putting a cloud over their championship season in 2017. It’s hard to say what will come next for the Astros organization. Fines are expected by a great many baseball fans, writers, and commentators, but larger punishments, such as bans, might be more difficult to manage. Whatever the decision will be, it is sure to make waves and leave a lasting impact on the future of baseball.

What is the value of an autographed baseball signed by the 1985 Astros?

User Avatar
A 1985 Houston Astros Team signed baseball with the key signatures Ryan, and Davis is worth about $75.-$100. I haven't seen many Astro team signed baseballs up for auction lately, and the price stated above might have to be updated but should be close. The price is based on average prices of recently closed auctions. Prices may vary based on condition, and the type of authenticity that accompanies the baseball. Prices may also vary based on the amount of signatures, and key signatures acquired. The more complete the baseball with key signatures the more valuable. Note: a Nolan Ryan single signed baseball could sell for more money than the Astros team signed baseball that has Ryan's signature. A signed baseball without a creditable letter of authenticity could sell for half the market value or less. Condition is as important. I will leave a link for Astro team signed baseballs complete with lists of key signatures, and links to full team rosters. As soon as I come across a more recent auction I will up date the price. Check back soon.

Who determines what jersey to wear before each game?

User Avatar
I heard that in Arizona the pitchers determine what jerseys to wear, so maybe that's what they do in houston, just an observation. It depends from team to team, but I know the Astros wear their alternate red jerseys on Sundays and holidays. Otherwise, it just comes down to white at home and gray on the road.

Is there any reason why the Astros are called what they are?

User Avatar
The word Astros is short for astronauts. They are called the Astros because NASA has a large base that produces a lot of jobs in Houston, Texas. Houston considers NASA to be a big part of their town, so therefor when the name The Houston Colt .45's was changed the name Astros fit well because NASA was becoming big in the midst of the space race with Russia.

On percentage do more balls get hit to right field or left field?

User Avatar
Don't know the percentages, but left field is more common. Most batters are right handed, and, on averge, a batter is more likely to "pull" the ball when he hits it. (Note: when a batter is said to "hit to the opposite field", that means that a right-handed batter hits to right field or a left-handed batter hits to left field. On the surface, this is not "opposite field" at all. But it's called "opposite field" because it goes against the natural tendency of a right hander to hit to left field and a left-hander to hit to right field.)

What year did the Astros first debut?

User Avatar
The club was initially founded in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45's and defeated the Chicago Cubs in their first game, 11-2 on April 10. In 1965, the Colt .45's changed their name to the Houston Astros, and played baseball's first indoor game at the Astrodome on April 9, defeating the New York Yankees 2-1 in an exhibition game. So, to answer the question, the "Astros" debuted on April 9, 1965 though the Houston team had been in place for 3 years. The Astros first season in MLB was in 1962.

Why did Andy Pettitte go to the Houston Astros?

User Avatar
Because he wanted to be close to home, and he wanted to spend time with his workout buddy, Roger Clemens, who also ditched New York. Don't feel bad about losing Pettite though. You've got Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright to replace the arm troubles that Amndy Pettite had. GO SOX!!

What color does Junction Jack use on the train?

User Avatar
That's a good question and I haven't been able to find that out. But being as how he is a railroad engineer and he works for the Astros whose team colors are brick red, black, and sand, my guess would be that he wears Astros colors on the train. If you click on the link on this page called 'Junction Jack' you can find some cool stuff about Junction Jack.
