Why do babies have more bones than adults?

User Avatar
Over the course of childhood and adolescence, many bones in the skull and pelvis fuse together. These are the largest and widest parts of a baby's body, having them composed of several loosely connected bones permits them to flex more during birth, making the process easier on both mother and baby. In adults it is more important for these same bones to be hard and strong, so by then they are mostly fused into a small number of larger bones. It depends on how you define "bone". In absolute terms, we are born with the same number of articulated skeletal members as we have throughout our lives; however, at birth some of these "bones" have only begun to ossify, such that they wouldn't show up on an X-ray. To ossify is to "turn to bone." Anatomically, this refers to depositing calcium in the cartilage to make it harder. Since X- rays show only calcified bone, uncalcified cartilage won't show up, even though that part of the skeleton is there and fully functional. So, if you restrict "bone" to mean "only those calcified bits of the skeleton that show up on X- rays," then newborns have fewer bones. If, on the other hand, you refer to a each skeletal member as a "bone," then newborns and adults have the same numbers. Because as you grow older some of your bones grow together to form single ones. Infants have three separate bones in their skull when they are born. The areas between these bones remain soft prior to birth, allowing the skull to remain malleable so it may pass through the birth canal more easily. These bones naturally fuse as the baby grows, becoming a single bone by adulthood.

My friend who is also 13 is 140 pounds but is 5' 8'' and is still growing and they need to put on the weight to grow or else they'll look like a twig. Okay,I'm 13 and my height is 5'1 (I'm pretty short) and my weight is about 36-37 kilos(around 80 pounds),but I'm very skinny,I think your weight is healthy. I'm 13 and my height is 5'1 and my weight is about 105 pounds, and I'm not skinny or fat, so I'm average. :) I am 5'2 and weigh 135 and i dont like it but it just depends!

How tall is an average 9 year old boy?

User Avatar
You may check a baby height percentile calculator so you would determine the percentile ranking of your child compared with other babies of the same age and gender. The World Health Organization has already set a growth chart for boys and girls, based on the child's percentile ranking.

At what height are you considered tall?

User Avatar
It depends on your age and gender. For a fully grown female adult anything 5'7 and above. For a fully grown male then 5'10 and above. ~Answered by unknown Don't worry though if you are 5'7 or taller. If you're a girl. That's not tall. I think that's actually a very good height to be. Or 5'8 too. 5'7 and 5'8 aren't very tall. I think they're about average. Because guys nowadays are taller. If you aren't 5'7 or above you're way to short for them. So don't worry. Plus most models are 5'10. So no matter what don't be ashamed of your height. If you're female, 5'8" and up, as most supermodels are between 5'9" and 5'11". The average female range is between 5'4" and 5'7". If you're male, 6'1" and up, though 6'3" is the minimum to be considered universally tall, anywhere. In some countries, 6'1" is rather short or average for a man. The average male range is between 5'9" and 6'0". The difference between male and female height is five inches. So if a 5'11" man was a woman, he'd be 5'6".
